6 Places to Visit When You Discover Hoi An’s Ancient Town

With just a small area, a little river and some ancient streest, Hoi An still captivates its visitors by the elegant charm of history, architecture and people. The little town conceals the tracks to a pasted prosperous time of a famous commercial port of Central Vietnam. Whether you discover Hoi An by yourself or via a tour operator, below is an useful list 6 places to visit when you take a stroll around this lovely town.

1.     Japanese Bridge (Bridge Pagoda) 

The Bridge Pagoda or the Japanese Bridge is known as a gem in the centre of Hoi An. Although it is small but keeps inside many secrets of an ancient town years after years. People say your Hoi An visit has completed without a visit to Japanese Pagoda. The special feature that distinguishes the Japanese Pagoda from others is its unique architecture that combines a pagoda and a bridge, that’s why it’s also called the Bridge Pagoda. The pavilion connects two streets, passing a small river brand and features sophisticated sculpture patterns, which is a perfect harmony of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and also Western culture. 

 

  2. Phuc Kien Temple

The former Phuc Kien temple was only a small temple worshiping Thien Hau Thanh Mau statue (god blessing Hoi An’s traders over ocean sucessfully), which was picked from the sea in 1697. After many times of maintenance, Phuc Kien Temple is getting more and more beautiful and become a historical character over Hoi An’s history.

 

3. Trieu Chau Temple

Trieu Chau Temple was built in 1845 by the Chinese people living in Hoi An in the early days. This temple is to worship Ma Vien sogun, who has much power to stop waves and winds to protect the transfer of traders over the sea.  A visit to Trieu Chau Temple will give you a look into Hoi An’s history, when many Chinese people came and brought Chinese custom to enrich the culture of this small town. 

 

4. The Tran Worship Temple

Built by a Mandarin of the Tran in 1802, based on the traditional Feng Shui of both Vietnamese and Chinese, the Tran Worship Temple is set in a wide area of about 1500 square meter. It is a typical sample for Vietnamese traditional worship place for an intellectual family that you can encounter several times during your Vietnam tour

 

5. Tan Ky Ancient House

 The 200 year-old house named Tan Ky is a nice stop in your Hoi An visit. It features the typical architecture of Hoi An’s house and is one of the most intact one that maintains until today. Divided into many rooms with different functions, Tan Ky give visitors a chance to travel back to the past of Hoi An, to imagine how people were living in these house, when they sell things at the front side and import items from the back side that connects with the river port. People built the house by traditional materials, in traditional way, which discloses elegant and small patterns. 


6.   Boutique artisanale

People talking about Hoi An cannot miss its unique handicraft villages. Once a thriving town to exchange products with other countries, Hoi An is home to many sophisticated traditional handicraft such as woven, pottery, lacquer, etc. Visit the handicraft workshop; you can witness the process to make many beautiful items from the skillful hands of the artisans.
