Ha Giang in Buckwheat Flowers Season

Ha Giang, Vietnam’s northernmost province, is a true hidden gem which promises travelers an authentic culture of many ethnic minorities here and some spectacular mountainous landscapes which inspired many photographers. But for those who really knows about Ha Giang, perhaps October is the best time for the best photos, as the famous buckwheat flowers (hoa tam giacmach) blossoms all over the magnificent plateaus here.

Buckwheat was widely cultivated by H’Mong people in the provinces of Cao Bang, Lao Cai and Ha Giang several decades ago. They use buckwheat for its grain-like seeds. The seeds are usually milled to make cakes from the buckwheat flour. Over the last 3 or 4 years, an increasing number of travelers flocked to these mountainous provinces to watch the flowers in bloom.

On the hill slopes, the rice terraces, near the twisty road or adjacent to the quaint houses, an endless number of buckwheat flowers covered Ha Giang in light pink. Together combined with the green color of lush trees of the forested mountains, they formed a sensationally beautiful picture that will make you stop and stare for a while.

Here are some tips for you to best enjoy these spectacular scenes:

·         Buckwheat flowers often blossoms from October to early November. The blossom season only lasts for one month. At the beginning, the flowers have a slight violet hue, then gradually turned into pink as the season goes on. Buckwheat flowers are also abundant in some other mountainous regions in Northern Vietnam such as Bat Xat, Bac Ha, MuongKhuong, TraLinh…

·         There are two ways to get to Ha Giang, either by motorbike or car. The 350 kilometer journey to this far highland involves some steep and demanding road, so if you choose to go by motorbike, make sure that you can handle your ride. The route maybe rough yet it will reward some breathtaking scenes that you will never forget.

·         The best place to enjoy the pure beauty of buckwheat flowers are along the National Route 4C in Dong Van District, the route from Xi Man to Hoang Su Phi or in Sung La Valley.

·         You can spend 3 or 4 days during your Vietnam tours in Ha Giang as there are several other interesting attractions to be explored. You can go along the mighty Ma Pi Leng Pass, regarded as the King of All Passes in Vietnam, to enjoy the stunning landscapes or discover the life of the ethnic minorities in the town of Dong Van.
