Cambodia is bordered by Thailand and Laos in the north, Vietnam in the east, and the Gulf of Thailand in the southwest. The landscape alternates between tropical rainforest and fertile cultivated land, irrigated by a dense river system. North-east of the country is mountainous. The capital is located at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap which passes by a large inland lake eponymous in the center of country. A string of islands shells off the southwest coast. Dry season from November to March, temperatures from 17-27 degrees. December and January are the coolest months. Rainy season from May to October, temperature from 27 to 35 degrees and humidity of 90%. April is the hottest month. Religion: The official religion of Cambodia is Theravada Buddhism, which was introduced by King Jayavarman, in the 12th century. There are also about 60,000 Muslims and 500,000 Christians. Languages: Beside the Khmer, which is the official language, French is spoken by elders and educated people. For many years, the trend among young Cambodians is learning English as a 2nd language. Currency: The official currency in Cambodia is the Riel with cuts of 100 to 10,000 riels. |
